Activities of the Department from 2009 to 2016

Conferences & Workshops

  1. The Department organized its first two-day National Conference on the theme ‘New Areas of Research in the English Language and Teaching: Challenges and Perspectives’ on 3rd and 4th March 2009 at MANUU.
  2. The Department organized its second two-day National Conference on the theme ‘New Perspectives in Non-Native Literatures in English’ on 23rd and 24th March 2010 at MANUU.
  3. The Department organized its third two-day National Conference on the theme ‘New Directions in Comparative Literature’ on 9th and 10th March 2011 at MANUU.
  4. The Department organized its fourth two-day National Conference on the theme ‘Language Literature and Society – Influences and Counter Influences’ on 17thand 18th February 2016.
  5. The Department organized a workshop on ‘Dealing with Mixed Ability Classes in the Indian Context’ on 15th March 2010.

Journal Publication
The Department started a Biannual International Peer reviewed Journal entitled Maulana Azad Journal of the English Language and Literature (MAJELL) from 2009, with an ISSN 09749268. The details of MAJELL’s publication are as enumerated below:

Guest Lectures organized by the Department 

  1. Mr. Keki N. Daruwalla, an eminent poet and Sahitya Akademi award winner delivered a lecture on 12th November 2014  in the Department.
  2. Ms. Parveen Talha, Ex-chairman, UPSC, delivered a lecture on 3rd December 2014 in the Department.
  3. Dr. T. Venkat Rajaiah, University College of Technology, Osmania University, delivered a lecture on the topic, ‘English Language Skills and Soft Skills’ on 23rd March 2015.
  4. Dr. Sudheer Bhan delivered a lecture on the topic, ‘A Neurolinguistic Perspective on Language Disorders in Children’ on 26th March 2015.
  5. Prof. Z N Patil, Professor (Retd.), EFLU, delivered a lecture on, ‘Spoken English’ on6th August 2015.
  6. Prof. SA Wahab Qaiser delivered a lecture on ‘Maulana Azad’ on 5th November 2014 in the Department.
  7. Prof. Siddiqui Mohd. Mahmood, Head Department of Education & Training and Controller of Examination, MANUU, delivered a lecture on ‘Maulana Abul Kalam Azad’ on 16th November 2015.
  8. Prof. K. Satyanarayana, Professor and Head, Dept. of Cultural Studies, EFLU delivered a lecture on 18th January 2016 on the topic ‘From Untouchable to Dalit: Dalit Writing at Literature of Self-transformation’
  9. Dr. M T Ansari, Professor, Centre for Comparative Literature, University of Hyderabad, delivered a lecture on, ‘Transnationalism’ on 23rd March 2016.
  10. Prof. Ramakrishna Rao, Professor (Retd), JNTU, delivered a lecture on the topic, ‘Language Skills’ on 21st March 2016.
  11. Prof. AK Ramakrishnan, JNU, delivered a lecture on 4th March 2016.
  12. Ms. Deepa Kiran, professional storyteller, writer and voice-over artist delivered lectures on 25th September 2017 on ‘Oral Storytelling-Role of oral tradition and narratives in the context of Multi-lingualism and cultural diversity in India’ and ‘Oral Storytelling-Pedagogical possibilities in language learning for the learner and teacher’.
  13. Prof. V. Ganeshan, EFLU, delivered lectures on 29th September 2017 on ‘Communication in English and its dimensions and ‘Conversational Strategies in Cross-Cultural Interaction’.
  14. Prof. B A Prabhakar Babu, EFLU, delivered lectures on 12th October 2017 on ‘Spoken English and Phonetics’.
  15. Dr. Melisa Helen, Nizam College, Hyderabad delivered a lecture on 30th October 2017 on the topic, ‘For Colored Girls: A Black Feminist Drama’.
  16. A lecture on ‘D. H. Lawrence’ was delivered by Prof. Mohanty on 5th September 2009
  17. A lecture on ‘Literature of the Romantic Period’ was delivered by Prof. Siddiq Ali on 25th February 2010
  18. A lecture on ‘Maulana Azad’ was delivered by Mr. P A Nazareth, Retd. Ambassador of India, Managing Trustee, Sarvodaya International Truston the topic on 2nd November 2012 in the Department of English.
  19. A lecture on ‘Indian Writing in Literature’ was delivered by Dr. M A Waheed on 18th March 2010.
  20. A lecture ‘Cultural Contributions of Maulana Azad’ was delivered by Dr. Irshad Ahmad on 28th October 2014.
  21. A lecture on ‘Gubbare Khatir’ was delivered by Prof. Amina Kishore on 3rd November 2014. 
  22. A lecture on ‘Maulana Azad an Overview’ was delivered by Prof. S A Wahab Qaiser 5th November 2014.   

Plays by the Students

  1. A Nukkad Natak was organized by the students of the Department of English on the issue of ‘Women’s Rights’.
  2. A play was enacted by the students of the Department of English, in connection with Maulana Azad Day Celebrations 2011.
  3. The students of the Department enacted a play based on a chapter ‘Interim Government’ from Maulana Azad’s India Wins Freedom, at Library Auditorium on 19th November 2014
  4. The Department of English presented a play on Ibn-e-Safi as part of a conference organized by CULLC, MANUU on Ibn-e-Safi.

Arts Exhibition/Painting/Poster Making Competition

  1. An exhibition of drawings and sketches based on literary texts and concepts prepared by Shahul Hameed, MPhil scholar of the Department of English was organized in March 2010.
  2. Mr. Suhaib VP, MPhil scholar organized an art exhibition in CULLC, building for two days in the month of September 2014.
  3. The Department organized a Poster Making competition in connection with Women’s Day on 8th March 2012.
  4. The Department conduct a painting / sketching / poster making competition in connection with Maulana Azad Day Celebration on 10th November 2012.

Other Activities

The Department of English conducted debates and discussions of the students on 21st February 2018 to celebrate InternationalMother Language Day.
